Design Thinking

Innovative ideas are the raw material of the future. To promote a special innovation culture, Hasso Plattner Institute offers supplementary academic training in “Design Thinking” – the first of its kind at a German university.

In Design Thinking, teams of four to six students from different disciples work together on a wide variety of projects. Guided by trainers from the HPI School of Design Thinking and seasoned professors and lecturers from different departments at Berlin and Brandenburg universities, students develop solutions for different problems according to a unique and specific methodology.

Basic Track

In the first semester (Basic Track), students get familiarized with the Design Thinking approach and are confronted with different areas of concentration.  In the subsequent three (or six) week projects this knowledge is deepened and applied to the relevant issue at hand. The problem definition of the six week project is pursued with external project partners from industry and society.

Advanced Track

The optional second semester (Advanced Track) encompasses a 12-week project with project partners who are entirely external. The small student groups each tackle a real problem and design innovative solutions, which are subsequently put into practice by the company.

There is no fixed curriculum in the project-oriented, postgraduate study program. The opportunity to begin the program is possible at any time. The optional Advanced Track can be pursued either directly after conclusion of the Basic Track or at a later date.
