1. Sino-D C-HPC 2011

1. Sino-German Workshop on “Cloud-based High Performance Computing”
September 26-October 1, 2011, Shanghai, China

Introduction:

As development and extension of High Performance Computing (HPC), Cloud Computing has been widely accepted shortly after being proposed. It has been recognized that Cloud Computing has completely changed the traditional way how IT is being used. To a certain extent, the significant performance on computing and storage makes Cloud Computing much more powerful than all existing supercomputing systems. Therefore, many researchers in the area of HPC become excited and meanwhile confused. Some researchers have claimed that Cloud Computing is the terminator of HPC, which means it could be a necessity that the more powerful Cloud Computing will completely replace HPC. However, there are also many other opinions which believe that HPC will not come to the end. One of the arguments is that the applications of Cloud Computing are completely different from traditional HPC applications. Then, what is indeed the relationship between Cloud Computing and HPC? This is exactly the issue which we expect to deeply discuss on this workshop. We are grateful to the Chinesisch-Deutsche Zentrum für Wissenschaftsförderung (CDZ, Sino-German Center for Science Foundation, a joint center of DFG & NSFC) to provide us the grant for organizing this workshop.

Goals:

The bilateral workshop will bring together the researchers from known research institutions in both Germany and China to deeply discuss the theme “HPC and Cloud Computing”. We believe this workshop and the further collaborations it might result in will strongly promote the development of research on the fundamental theories and key techniques of Cloud-based High Performance Computing technology. The goal of this workshop can be summarized as:

  • Introduce fundamental as well as newly emerged theories
  • Explore new research topics, routines and methodologies
  • Present the current work results, running projects and exchange ideas
  • Promote the research and development cooperation in the area of cloud-based HPC
