Mobile communications / Mobilkommunikation

Content

This class will explain basic mechanisms for wireless and mobile communication, protocols used in a wireless context (e.g., MAC protocols), and work its way up to two popular system classes: cellular communication (i.e., 3G UMTS, 4G LTE, 5G, with some speculation about 6G) and WiFi (in the many forms of 802.11). Time permitting, we might cover also short-range or energy-efficient wireless systems (like Bluetooth 802.15.4 or LoRa).

Format

This class is typical lecture + homework assignment class. Most probably, exams will happen as oral exams (depending on number of participants). The class can be taught in German or English, depending on audience preferences (lecture material is in English, though).

Time and room assignment are still being worked upon. Most likely: Monday, 11:00 - 12:30, Wednesday 9:15 - 10:45. Probably in K1-02.

All material will be provided via Moodle. Please register for this course in Moodle!

Prerequisites

You really should have some background in computer networks in general. In particular, some basic understanding of physical and link-layer aspects is really recommended. Also, some basics in probability theory and linear algebra will ensure that you enjoy the class much more. There is also a self-assessment test so you can check yourself whether you think you have the necessary prerequisites. If not, please talk to Holger Karl and we can see whether the class still makes sense for you.

Exams

  • There will individual oral exams; by appointment.
  • In order to be admitted to the exam, you need to successfully submit TWO homework assignments; submission is individually per student (no group work); you can freely choose which ones to work on out of a list of over 10 assignments. You can keep submitting solutions until you have reached two successful submissions. No bonus points will be awarded for the actual exam.

Literature

No standard textbook. Details are in lecture slides via Moodle.

Module
