Potsdam/Darmstadt. Software AG and the Hasso-Plattner-Institute for IT-Systems Engineering have announced their future scientific cooperation. As both partners stated, the purpose of this cooperation is to jointly work on innovative IT technologies. With more than 3000 customers worldwide, Darmstadt-based Software AG is one of the largest German solution providers in the area of service-oriented IT architectures. The Hasso-Plattner-Institute is dedicated to the research of the scientific fundamentals of architectural models for the efficient provision of IT-supported services.

"Software AG and the Hasso-Plattner-Institute have a similar focus in terms of service-oriented IT-systems. A cooperation literally suggested itself", Prof. Dr. Mathias Weske, heading the Business Process Technology group at Hasso-Plattner-Institute, explains. "For us, it is crucial to understand the current research trends and innovations, bringing them to readiness for production. With HPI as a partner, we have found our perfect match", Dr. Peter Kürpick, member of the board of Software AG, adds. He is responsible for research & development within the product line "crossvision".

"Research has to prove the validity of its results in tangible software systems. This is why we consider industry cooperations mandatory. With Software AG, we have won one of the most successful and innovative German IT enterprises for this cooperation. This will help us to identify new research aspects at an earlier stage, ensuring the relevance of our research in practice", Prof. Weske explains. The scope of the cooperation will also include the chair Operation Systems and Middleware specialised on components technologies held by Prof. Andreas Polze.

The focus of the cooperation will be service-oriented architectures and semantic service specifications. The methods and technologies worked out in these areas are supposed to provide, discover, and administer IT-supported services more efficiently and cost-effectively.

For this purpose, Software AG has developed its product line "crossvision", providing an integrated solution platform. At the HPI, research projects like Adaptive Service Grid apply semantic methods for innovations in the area of service descriptions

Several joint publications and projects have been mapped out for the cooperation. Additionally, both partners will work together in various scientific and industry task forces. One of the first activities will be a joint keynote during the industry workshop "SOA and semantics: Automation potentials for SOA through Semantic Web Services" coming up in Koblenz in June.
