Potsdam. On March 27-30, 2006, leading engineers from 30 nations will attend a conference at the Hasso Plattner Institute (www.hpi-web.de) focusing on the increasing complexity of computer based software systems. According to the conference´s director, Professor Werner Zorn of the Hasso Plattner Institute (HPI), the four-day program is designed to facilitate a broad exchange on the latest scientific research among the over 100 attending specialists from the fields of software, hardware and communication systems. The most recent industrial developments will also be presented at the conference in Potsdam, which is sponsored by the IEEE.

The IEEE Computer Society (www.computer.org) was founded exactly 60 years ago and currently represents an association of 100,000 engineers and computer scientists from more than 140 countries. The meeting in Potsdam is the association´s 13th Annual IEEE International Conference and Workshop of the Engineering of Computer Based Systems (ecbs06.hpi.uni-potsdam.de).

"The motto of the conference, 'Mastering the Complexity of Computer Based Systems', is a perfect complement to our specific approach at the Hasso Plattner Institute," explains HPI Director Prof. Christoph Meinel on the HPI´s function as conference host. The HPI is the only privately-financed university institute in Germany. Approximately 360 students are currently pursuing Bachelor and Master degrees as part of the HPI´s unique "IT Systems Engineering" program. The Institute boasts over fifty professors and visiting lecturers including Prof. Hasso Plattner, HPI founder and Chairman of the Supervisory Board at the software giant SAP. These experts provide each new group of talented newcomers with the education and training needed to be able to design and master large and complex IT systems. The HPI´s young IT engineering graduates usually go on to become Chief Information Officers (CIO), Systems Architects and Project Managers or even to found their own IT companies.

The program of this year´s IEEE Conference in Potsdam includes more than 60 lectures given by industry experts from a variety of fields. Among the prominent lecturers from Germany is Dr. Claus Grimm (DaimlerChrysler Research and Technology), who will speak on "Trends and Challenges in Automotive Software Engineering". Five scientists from the conference´s host organization, the Hasso Plattner Institute, will also be holding lectures. They include Professor Werner Zorn (Director) and Dr. Peter Tabeling, who is also a member of the conference program committee, along with Dr. Matthias Riebisch from the Technical University of Ilmenau (State of Thuringia).
