Securing Cloud Storages (Wintersemester 2014/2015)

Beschreibung

Cloud computing is an emerging computing paradigm that dynamically offers computing services as a utility via pay-as-you-go model.  Amongst the growing cloud technologies, cloud storage has attracted huge patronage. Storing data in the cloud is cheap, scalable and flexible and the proliferation of mobile devices essentially enhances these benefits. Despite these attractive features, there are fears regarding cloud storage. Cases of cloud service outages, unauthorized third party access to data and vendor lock-in discourage clients from using commercial public cloud. Consequently, enterprises resort to own resources, such as private clouds. This ultimately results to additional expenses, which could be evaded by leveraging on public cloud storage options.  It is therefore imperative that mitigative methods be evolved against the aforementioned public cloud storage concerns.

The seminar will be an offshoot of the ongoing CloudRAID research project [1]. The goal is to develop a standalone web and/or native mobile (Android or iOS) application and connect it to the CloudRAID API. Participants would also have the opportunity to tackle open research questions in this context, such as optimization of erasure coding performance in browsers.

Voraussetzungen

Good programming skills are mandatory. Additionally, students may profit from previous participation in the lecture Internet Security.

Lern- und Lehrformen

This seminar is focused on practical work. Students will familiarize themselves with the topic "Securing Cloud Storages" and develop ideas to solve specific given challenges. The main part of the seminar will be design and implementation of a suitable solution. Finally, students will be expected to present their results and submit a technical report. The bulk of seminar sessions will be dedicated for group work with provision for physical meetings with the tutors.

Leistungserfassung

The final evaluation will be based on:

  • Initial research / idea presentation, 10%
  • Implementation, 40% (incl. 10% for Integration)
  • Final presentation, 25%
  • Technical Report, 12-18p LNCS, 25%

The first seminar session will be at October 16th. Seminars will take place at the following slots:
