Automated Evaluation of Physical Exercise
Jan Philipp Sachs
Obesity and muscular atrophy are widespread and increasing population health problems in many countries of the world. Besides other behavioral changes, physical exercise is the key to solve these health conditions. However, pudency, a lack of mobility and unawareness of correct exercise performance prevent affected patients from either starting or in the long term from adhering to physical exercise schemes. In cooperation with the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City and by using state-of-art consumer electronics, we address these problems by developing a real-time video capture and analytics application. By automatically recognizing repetitive movement and giving instantaneous feedback to the users about the quality of their execution and performance, we enable a low-threshold access to correct and long-lasting physical exercise for everyone.
