Hasso Plattner Institute: Containing Epidemics with the Real-Time Analysis of Big Data

How can life-threatening and uncontrollably fast-spreading infectious diseases such as Ebola, cholera, Lassa fever, meningococcal or measles be contained with the help of Big Data technologies? This is what CeBIT exhibitor the Hasso Plattner Institute (Hall 9, Stand D44) is working on with its scientific partners involved in infection and epidemiology research in collaboration with African authorities. Thanks to special mobile applications, experts in affected countries can be centrally coordinated and are therefore able to get the latest information about suspected cases and contacts in a national database as quickly as possible. The technology researched at HPI (https://hpi.de) for lightning-fast and flexible processing and analysis of large amounts of data (In-Memory Data Management) ensures the creation of interactive, current status analysis. In this way trends are recognized early on and potential developments can be simulated. The detection of suspicious cases helps local stakeholders and specialists on various governmental levels efficiently organize the necessary countermeasures to stop the spread of disease.
