Model-Based Design of a Power Window System: Modeling, Simulation, and Validation
Model-Based Design allows experimenting with different design alternatives, even in very early conceptual design stages, while having an executable specification and taking detailed implementation effects into account. This is in contrast to a document based approach where each of the design stages generates new models of the same system under design from the specification of the previous design stage. This presentation illustrates Model-Based Design of a power window control system as typically found in modern automobiles. A typical power window system is designed to meet various requirements, e.g., there should be a 10 [cm] bounce-back in case an obstacle is detected, and the maximum force exerted on the obstacle should be 100 [N]. Plant model of the power window system at various levels of detail are created to gradually refine the controller towards an implementation.
About Pieter J. Mosterman:
Pieter J. Mosterman was born March 16, 1967 in Nes on the island Ameland off the coast of the Netherlands. In 1985 he started the B.Sc. program at the University of Twente which he received in 1987, followed by his M.Sc. in Electrical Engineering from the Control Laboratory in 1991. In 1992 he enrolled in the Ph.D. program of Vanderbilt University, Nashville, TN, and graduated at the Center for Intelligent Systems in 1997 with a Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering. His main research interest is in Computer Automated Multiparadigm Modeling (CAMPaM) specifically in the context of Model-Based Design.
Dr. Mosterman has served as Chair and Program Committee member of several conferences and workshops, and he has organized special sessions at the 2001 IEEE Conference on Control Applications, the 2000 IEEE International Symposium on Computer-Aided Control System Design (CACSD), and Eurosim '98. He is currently a member of the IEEE Technical Committee on CACSD, the IFAC Technical Committees on Discrete Event and Hybrid Systems and on Fault-Detection, Supervision and Safety of Technical Processes, Editor-in-Chief of SIMULATION: Transactions of The Society for Modeling and Simulation International, and associate editor of IEEE Transactions on Control System Technology and the International Journal of Applied Intelligence. He was Guest Editor of special issues of ACM Transactions on Modeling and Computer Simulation and IEEE Transactions on Control System Technology on the topic of CAMPaM, Expert Reviewer for the Fifth Framework Program of the EU, and a member of the design team of the Modelica language for modeling physical systems.
