Patron of science, HPI founder and SAP co-founder, Prof. Hasso Plattner ensured that people around the world could have free access to the latest knowledge from the rapidly changing fields of information technology and innovation with the launch of openHPI.
User numbers reflect the success of this educational innovation. Over 400,000 have enrolled in courses, with approximately 150,000 learners from more than 180 countries on the platform. Especially successful participants in the "Massive Open Online Courses" (MOOCs), offered in German, English and Chinese, receive a certificate. The institute has issued so far more than 40,000 certificates.
Students can now also get credit points for openHPI courses that count toward their university education. Anyone interested can already use most of the instructional videos before enrolling in an openHPI course. Registration is only necessary to take graded exams and get a certificate.
Participants in the online courses are able to flexibly organize their learning time. In the openHPI forum, they can ask questions immediately and engage in exchange with other learners and the instructors-a decisive advantage over conventional digital teaching formats. "Thus an active, virtual learning community is built up around the videos, online exercises and exams that inspires and motivates," says HPI director Prof. Dr. Christoph Meinel. He sees in openHPI "an excellent means of improving digital literacy in society and getting people on board in the digital transformation."
