FAQs for Master‘s Applicants

Are you interested in our master’s program? We will gladly assist you with your application. Here we would like to answer the most important questions you may have about your application to the master’s program.

Can I study at HPI with no or very little knowledge of German?

Although many courses at HPI are offered in English, a good command of German is necessary. If German is not your native language, you have to provide proof of language proficiency (level DSH 2) for the Bachelor and Master IT Systems Engineering and the Master Data Engineering (see below).

On the other hand, the Master of Digital Health in English does not require knowledge of the German language, you will need proof of English language skills that are at least C1 in the European Framework of Reference for Languages.

How can I prove that I have sufficient knowledge of German?

Prospective students who have not yet (successfully) passed the German language test for admission to higher education are asked to inform themselves in good time about how they can demonstrate the necessary language skills. For this information, please contact the International Office at the University of Potsdam.

I have earned my bachelor’s degree in a different major than computer science/IT systems engineering. Who decides if I can be admitted to the master’s program at HPI?

Whether or not you can be admitted to the master’s program is decided by the admissions committee based on the admission regulations.

Can I check in advance whether or not I meet the formal eligibility requirements regarding my degree?

The question as to whether your (first) degree is suitable for admission to the master’s program at HPI is something that is decided at the time of your application by the admissions committee. We are also available in advance to answer questions pertaining to your qualifications. Please contact us at: Studienreferat(at)hpi.uni-potsdam.de

Do I have to pay tuition fees for the master’s program at HPI?

No, the studies at HPI are tuition-free. Students are only obliged to pay the semester fee at the University of Potsdam (approx. 250 euros per semester).

I have already applied online through UNI-ASSIST. To whom do I now send the required documents—to HPI directly or to UNI-Assist?

Both sites are glad to take your documents and to exchange the relevant information with each other. Therefore please send your documents to only one of the two addressees – either HPI or UNI-ASSIST. We recommend that you submit your application within a reasonable time period before the deadline. That way it allows us sufficient time to contact you in case of missing documents.
