This lecture will be held in a Stanford-like teaching approach at the HPI D-School. The course is composed of two interwoven parts: Technological discussions and a design project.
The idea is to look into immutable concepts illustrated by real world examples. Topics related to the contents of Prof. Plattner's lecture "Trends and Concepts in the Software Industry I" will be taken up and reflected on.
From the design perspective topics include design processes, innovation methodologies, need finding, human factors, prototyping, and team dynamics. Students experience a hands-on project embedded in the technological topics of this course.
The lecture (discussions and design parts) will be held Monday through Wednesday. Participants will be separated into small teams and assigned a topic as well as a design challenge to work on. Thursday will be a lecture-free day to have enough time to prepare the group topic for the final presentation and create or polish the prototype from the design challenge. On Friday the topics will be presented by recapturing them in own words and discussing additional thoughts and an outlook.
All participants are encouraged to prepare questions for discussion, which will also help to prepare for their own presentations. All discussions, presentations and the lecture will be held in English language.
Prof. Plattner's lecture "Trends and Concepts in the Software Industry I" is recommended but not required.
Please have a look at http://epic.hpi.uni-potsdam.de/Home/TrendsAndConceptsII2007 for pre-reading material. Participants are strongly encouraged to review this material before the lecture takes place.
Participants should also be familiar with the materials from the summer lecture, which can be found here: http://epic.hpi.uni-potsdam.de/Home/TrendsAndConceptsI2007
Groupwork, Discussions, Lecture, Multimedia presentations.
Grading will primarily be based on team work in small teams. Each team will be assigned a specific task to work on. All topics discussed during the seminar shall be applied to that task.
- Group-presentations and discussions in a panel discussion
- Short written report about group work and discussion results
- Possibility to reward outstanding seminar contributions
The lecture will take place February 4th - 8th, 2008.
We meet on Monday at 9h00 am at the HPI d.school. More information on the schedule can be found here: http://epic.hpi.uni-potsdam.de/Home/TrendsAndConceptsII2007
