Description

Please note: The course will be combined with the other one and will be taught by Ms. Clark from January 4th, 2023 on.

Specialists in the field of computer science and information technology often develop programs and systems for other sectors of a business organization: leadership assessment or teambuilding for human resources, monitoring throughput for production, calibrating metrics for research and development, implementing environmental controls for an industrial complex, or determining user preferences for a newly-developed product.

This course will provide students a fundamental understanding of the driving principles and functions of a business organization, strengthen English language skills, as well as exercise rhetoric, critical thinking and problem solving abilities to not only apply technical knowledge more effectively, but also be a more proficient communicator.

Using short business case studies, each student will evaluate a situation in their chosen business area, define the problem, propose a solution, and support why the proposal is an optimal solution based on the given information.  After presenting their analysis to their peers, the student will then submit a written analysis of their case.

Each student will also work independently to assess their English grammar proficiency and be given tools to strengthen identified weaknesses.  To further develop listening and reading comprehension skills, there will be exercises at various intervals throughout the semester.  Students will also have access to an online library of material for self-paced learning.

The number of participants is limited to encourage maximally effective learning in a 90-minute weekly course offering.

Examination

The course credit has been modified due to the change of the lecturer: Final grades are now determined by performance on the oral presentation and the written paper. The overall grade is calculated from the weighting of the written paper (60%) and the grade from the oral presentation (40%).
