THE GUIDE "Spike Lee at Twain House Spike Lee will give a comprehensive view of his approach to films in his role as director, writer, actor and producer in a lecture in Hartford on Wednesday. Mr. Lee's talk, at the Mark Twain House and Museum at 7 p.m., is titled ''America Through My Lens.'' The filmmaker, who has explored urban racial tension, interracial relationships and historical figures of the 20th century in his films, will also give his views on politics and race. Private Works at the Bruce A prodigious amount of art held by private collectors is getting some attention from the Bruce Museum in Greenwich with a series of exhibitions. The first is on view through March 27 and features 56 works from the early and late 20th century. Sculptures by Aristide Maillol and Louise Bourgeois are a sampling of the works, along with paintings by Guy Pene du Bois, Keith Haring, Lucien Freud and Francis Bacon, drawings and prints by David Hockney, Pablo Picasso and Jean-Michel Basquiat. The roster of artists also includes works by Max Beckmann, Rene Magritte, Joseph Beuys, Man Ray and Juan Munoz, among others. The Bruce is off Exit 3 on Interstate 95 in downtown Greenwich and is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults, $4 for people 65 and older and students, and free on Tuesday. Choral Gathering at Yale Sir David Willcocks, icon of British choral music, will conduct a concert of works by British composers Sunday at 5 p.m. in Woolsey Hall, corner of Grove and College Streets on the Yale campus in New Haven. The event marks the end of a one-week conducting residency at Yale. Performing separately under his baton will be the Yale Camerata, the Yale Glee Club and the Yale Schola Cantorum, and the three groups will be joined by trumpets and drums for a rendition of Handel's ''Zadock the Priest,'' which was first performed at the coronation of George II in 1727. All About Quilts Quilts in a myriad of sizes, types and materials, each handmade and with a story behind them, may be seen at the Southport Congregational Church, at 524 Pequot Avenue in Southport, on Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Cecily Zerega, an authority on the use of quilts as codes for travelers on the Underground Railroad during the Civil War, will lecture on the subject Saturday at 2 p.m. Hands-on demonstrations on what to do with stray quilt blocks, how to make folded origami embellishments and an invitation to try stitching a quilt occur all day Saturday.
