Bridging the Research – Practice Gap: Towards Innovation Algorithms and Qualitative Functions in Domain Specific Design Scenarios OR "What does that d.wallet have to do with me?"
In this talk, I will share new directions in my thinking, research, teaching and practice on how theoretical design knowledge can be applied effectively to specific design contexts. Instead of attempting to bridge a large gap between academic research and diverse professional practices, I will discuss strategies and tactics for making small, easily deployed steps which serve as prompts to navigate the Research – Practice Gap.
Dr. Jonathan Antonio Edelman, Visiting Professor, Hasso Plattner Institute. Before his appointment at HPI, Jonathan served as Head of Programme for Global Innovation Design at the Royal College of Art, London. At the RCA, Jonathan introduced research driven design to the practice driven program. Prior to that Jonathan was the Director of Interdisciplinary Design at Stanford University’s Product Realization Lab, as well as Consulting Assistant Professor in Mechanical Engineering and Visiting Associate Professor at Stanford.
Jonathan is a Visiting Professor at Politecnico di Milano, Dipartimento di Design, and has taught at University of California Berkeley, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Grenoble Institute of Technology, School of Industrial Engineering and Management, Tecnológico de Monterrey, Departamento Diseño Industrial, and helped design a capstone design program at Phillips-Exeter Academy for high school students.
Jonathan holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Math and Philosophy from St. John’s College, Annapolis, a Master of Fine Arts in Product Design from Stanford’s Joint Programme in Design, and a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford’s Center for Design Research. His studies focused on Integrated Design and Manufacture. His dissertation, ‘Understanding Radical Breaks: the affordances of shared media in small team interaction’ broke new ground in understanding the intertwined role of media and behaviours in the generation of novel concepts.
