Research Topic: Benchmarking Composite Transaction and Analytical Processing Systems

The focus of my thesis within our research area In-Memory Enterprise Data Management is the development of a composite workload benchmark, based on real SAP applications and customer data, and a surrounding comparison methodology that includes dimensions such as flexibility, ease-of-use, total cost of ownership, and timeliness of results. This methodology will be applied to conventional data management systems as a baseline as well as new systems that are able to adapt to varying workloads flexibly. The expected contributions of this research are a) guidelines for which composite systems are appropriate to use in which circumstances, b) the comparison methodology itself (see my blog post "The Case for a Combined OLTP and OLAP Benchmark" in our In-Memory Blog), and c) a quantification of fundamental trade-offs in system design when expecting mixed workloads.

  • Development of a benchmark called Composite Benchmark for Transactions and Reporting (CBTR) for mixed OLTP and OLAP workloads
  • Implementation of a tool chain to run the benchmark and result evaluation (please also see the CBTR benchmark page for more details)
  • Application of the proposed benchmark on different database types (in-memory, disk-based, row and column-oriented) for the evaluation of the impact of

    • mixing OLTP with OLAP
    • the variation of logical database design, in particular data schemas on OLTP and OLAP query performance
