Potsdam. The Hasso Plattner Institute will be holding a Chinese-German workshop on the practical applications of cloud computing and high performance computing from the 22nd to the 25th of October. Approximately 30 researchers from both countries will be dealing with the challenges that address the user’s wish for a more secure, efficient and comfortable provision of the required services. A precursor event has already taken place, held last fall in Shanghai (China).

“Among other topics, we would like to discuss with our Chinese colleagues how energy consumption can be reduced in the context of environmental protection,” said HPI director Prof. Christoph Meinel. He is leading the workshop together with Prof. Wu Zhang from Shanghai University. According to Meinel, data protection issues and the security of infrastructure and services will also be addressed by the participants.

On the last day of the workshop the scientists are joining in a celebration marking the tenth anniversary of the teleteaching project between Germany and China. German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle is also attending the ceremony to pay tribute to the “Internet Bridge” that exists between Potsdam and Beijing.

At the workshop, 15 German scientists from Aachen, Bayreuth, Berlin, Chemnitz, Cottbus, Dresden, Karlsruhe, Stuttgart, Paderborn and Potsdam will present their research results. On the Chinese side, 15 professors from universities in Shanghai, Beijing, Nanjing, Wuhan Hangzhou and Hefei will be speaking. The Hasso Plattner Institute at the University of Potsdam is organizing the event together with the High Performance Computing Center and the School of Computer Science and Engineering at Shanghai University. The event is being sponsored by the Chinese-German Center for Research Promotion (CDZ), which is a joint venture foundation of the German Research Foundation (DFG) and the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC).
