The value of business processes management (BPM) has been acknowledged as an essential asset to drive a company. One of the most important and challenging BPM aspects is decision making. Decisions range from routine choices, such as how many items to order, to unexpected ones such as what to do if a key employee suddenly quits. With massive volumes of information available today, managers are challenged to make highly complex decision in shortest periods. As companies are interested in running effective and competitive processes, they develop different decision support software (i.e., IBM Operational Decision Management, SAP Decision Service Management). Whether companies develop packaged decision management systems, adopt business rules, or apply advanced analytics to their business, a thorough decision understanding, modelling and execution is critical.

In the seminar, we will present to the students the recently published standard Decision Model & Notation™ (DMN 1.0), a modelling notation for operational decisions that aims to complement the popular BPMN 2.0 standard for modelling business processes. At this point, the question of using and integrating DMN and BPMN is of highest importance. In the frames of the seminar, the students will be offered to study in depth a selected direction of decision management in business processes. For deepening the obtained knowledge and understanding the practical use of decision management and modelling, the students will be asked to implement a small prototype in the field of their exploration.

Voraussetzungen

The seminar is organized for Master students, who have a sufficient background in software programming. The seminar will be held in English.

Leistungserfassung

The students are expected perform the following tasks, which will determine the final grading:

  • Preparation of the paper with investigation of the chosen topic
  • Review of 2 papers prepared by other students
  • Prototype/case study on the topic (individual for each topic)

Termine

All the meetings take place at the BPT Chair (building C, open space of 2nd floor).

Following the introductory meeting, the seminar will proceed with the enrollment procedures and assigning topics to students. For each student, individual supervisors - experts in the selected topics – will be appointed. Such approach will allow the flexible scheduling of meetings of supervisors and students, so that there will be no regular group meetings during the semester
