Beschreibung

Background

Cloud computing is a key enabler for digital transformation, it empowers several desired attributes e.g. agility, scalability and self-service. Therefore, leading companies and orgainzations continually leverage cloud technologies to gain business advantge over their counterparts. However, security is core challenge to cloud adoption, attacks against cloud platforms are increasing and becoming more creative and difficult to tackle e.g. the Capital One Hack. Clearly, it is imperative for new security tools and techniques to be evolved to address these security issues.

 

Problem

The technolgies underlying cloud infrastructure combine several existing technologies e.g. virtualization, distributed systems and web services. Furthermore, public cloud providers e.g. Amazon Web Services offer cloud services as a utility, thus security responsibilities are shared between the cloud providers and the cloud customers (tenants).  This models differs from traditional computing models hence most existing security tools and techniques fail to address the aforementieond security challenges in the cloud. 

There is therefore a gap of tools that are cloud-native (understand the cloud environments), customer-centric (designed in a way that human errors are minimized) and automated (automation is a key requirement in the cloud ).

Voraussetzungen

  • Good programming skills in object oriented languages especially Java.
  • Practical software design  and development skills.
  • Basic interest in cloud technologies e.g. Amazon WEb Services, Google Cloud Platform.
  • Basic knowledeg of access control mechnisms
  • Basic interest/desire to learn practical cyber security concepts and techniques e.g. cryptography.

Students will be organised into groups of 2-3 people to tackle specific topics.
