This lecture will be held in a Stanford-like teaching approach at the HPI D-School. The course is composed of two interwoven parts: Technological discussions and a design project. Topics related to the contents of Prof. Plattner's lecture "Trends and Concepts in the Software Industry I" will be taken up and reflected on.
From the design perspective topics include design processes, innovation methodologies, need finding, human factors, prototyping, and team dynamics. Students experience a hands-on project embedded in the technological topics of this course.
After course registration has ended, articles will be published and small groups will be assigned to prepare a short presentation (15 minutes) about topics of selected articles.
The block lecture (discussions and design parts) will be held Monday through Wednesday (Feb. 16-18). Participants will be separated into teams and assigned a topic as well as a design challenge to work on. Thursday will be a lecture-free day to have enough time to prepare the group topic for the final presentation and create or polish the prototype from the design challenge. On Friday the topics will be presented by recapturing them in own words and discussing additional thoughts and an outlook.
All participants are encouraged to prepare questions for discussion, which will also help to prepare for their own presentations.
Prof. Plattner's lecture "Trends and Concepts in the Software Industry I" is recommended but not required.
Pre-reading material will be posted here.
Participants should also be familiar with the materials from the summer lecture.
Lern- und Lehrformen
Groupwork, Discussions, Lecture, Multimedia presentations.
Grading will primarily be based on team work in small teams and the presentation of the results. Each team will be assigned specific tasks during the lecture. All topics discussed prior and during the block lecture shall be applied to that task.
- 10% short group presentation (15 minutes) prior to the seminar
- 90% final group presentation (20 minutes + 10 minutes discussion) and individual performance in discussions and group work during the seminar
Prior to the block lecture, 2 sessions for the 15 minute presentions of each teams reading material will be held on Thursday Feb. 12 and Friday Feb. 13, 2009, 1:30pm - 3pm at SNB-E.10/11. After the assignment of their articles, teams are encouraged to meet with their tutor individually before those presentations sessions.
The block lecture will take place Feb. 16 through 20, 2009 at the D-School, starting at 9:15am every morning.
