Enterprise Data Models and their Performance (Sommersemester 2007)
In this seminar advanced technologies for the handling of enterprise data will be analyzed. Traditionally, enterprise data was - and still is - stored in disc-based relational databases. However, technology has experienced huge advancements since the first ideas about storing data in relational databases appeared, e.g. growing size of main memory or multi-core processors. The question that this seminar shall answer is whether there are new methods of handling data that exploit the characteristics of the advanced technology. This means for example to hold the entire data in main memory and use new algorithms for data storage that take advantage of the random access, or to profit from faster calculations through massive parallelization and data distribution.
Each participant has to write a paper that adheres to the guidelines of scientific writing. The participants are also required to prepare a presentation about their topic. In doing so, they will learn how to defend one's ideas in front of the scientific community. Furthermore, the participants are required to build up impartial opinions on the work of the other participants by writing obejctive reviews of their papers.
In order to acquire the 6 graded credit points, seminar participants have to fulfill the following requirements:
- Preparation of a seminar topic
- Write a paper on the topic
- Review the papers of fellow seminar participants
- Give a talk about the seminar topic (approx. 45 minutes including discussion)
The first seminar meeting will take place on April, 17 in room V2.16 (HPI Villa) from 13h30 until 15h00. We do not intend to meet regularly with the group of all participants. Instead, each particiant will be assigned to a supervisor with whom he or she will arrange individual meetings. Further information about the seminar will be provided in the first meeting.
