Design Science Methodology (Wintersemester 2015/2016)

Dozent: Prof. Dr. Mathias Weske (Business Process Technology) , Sankalita Mandal (Business Process Technology)

Beschreibung

The main objective of the seminar is to provide students with opportunities to study the design science process in depth. The core of this process is a cycle that iterates over two main activities, namely, designing an artifact (e.g., an algorithm, an architecture, a technique etc.) to improve a situation and empirically investigating the performance of the artifact in a specific context (e.g., the organization, the stakeholder needs etc.). Design science is strongly linked to engineering.

The seminar will deal with topics that can serve as guidelines on the following:

  • Learning conceptual frameworks and theories in design science
  • Applying various empirical methods of evaluation
  • Analyzing research problems while taking design goals and knowledge questions into consideration
  • Validating artifact designs and empirically investigating artifacts in context
  • Presenting the results of the design cycle as a whole

Voraussetzungen

The lecture is for Master students with an interest in design science and engineering.

Lern- und Lehrformen

There will be a short introduction into Design Science Methodology (one lecture) in the beginning. Then the students have time to work on their individual topics with their supervisors. During the semester there will be one lecture about "How to give scientific presentation" and about "How to write scientific paper".

Leistungserfassung

Each student is graded by

1) one short presentation at the beginning of the semester,

2) one final presentation at the end of the semester, and

3) one paper on the work done throughout the semester.
