openHPI: Web Accessibility - Opening up web applacations for everyone (Wintersemester 2015/2016)

Beschreibung

When we engineer web applications we try to empathize the needs of our users. But not all of the times we might be aware that many of our users have to deal with some sort of disability.

In this seminar, we are not only going to look at the norms and the tools to check and optimize web applications. Instead we are going to apply all of this to optimize everybody’s user experience on openHPI. openHPI is a complex learning platform, featuring most of todays trending web technologies: Responsive Design, Client Side Rendering, Video Content (Single and Dual Stream). There are also mobile apps for Android (published) and iOS (under development) that can be taken into consideration.

Our course agenda:

  1. Web Accessibility 101

  2. Modern Web Architectures and their challenges

  3. Evaluating Accessibility of web applications

  4. Optimizing Accessibility

  5. Keeping Accessibility (Can we automate checks?)

Voraussetzungen

Basic Knowledge of Web / HTML. We can recommend you a MOOC if you don't have this.

Leistungserfassung

Perform a website evaluation (group work) for a joined paper

Optimize either a web-application, a mobile (hybrid) application or create/improve a tool

Short presentation (5-10 minutes)
