Grace Hopper Celebration

From 2 to 5 October 2013 the Hasso Plattner Institute (HPI) will be part of the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing in Minneapolis. With the motto "Think Big, Drive Forward" it is designed to bring the research and career interests of women in the IT world to the forefront. The Grace Hopper Celebration is the largest conference for women in computing worldwide.

The HPI encourages young women to opt for a degree in computer science: In order to explore amount of creativity and flexibility which is needed in this subject but also benefit from the great professional opportunities in IT. Female scientists are highly welcome to apply for a position at HPI Research School.

• openHPI – The Open and Interactive Learning Platform
  openHPI works according to the principle of “Massive Open Online Courses” (MOOC). It addresses a general audience to introduce the foundations of information technology. Our courses match the high-quality curriculum at HPI, Germany’s highest ranked computer science institute. Participation is free and there are no prerequisites of any kind. Our courses enable individual participants to join a virtual learning community, where lively discussions encourage a stimulating exchange of questions and a collaborative learning of the subject.

• tele-TASK – Innovative Technology for E-lecturing
  The tele-TASK system is a technology for recording and distributing lectures and presentations over the Internet. Thanks to tele-TASK any interested user may access lectures, presentations and events - both live broadcasts and archived records - from anywhere in the world. The content is accessible via www.tele-TASK.de, its own web portal and on iTunes U. Thus learning is made possible on the bus, in a waiting room or outside in a park. In contrast to other solutions, the tele-TASK videos and podcasts show the presenter's video synchronized with the laptop or panel presentation. tele-TASK is also a project with various research fields such as e-learning, social web, video analysis, video editing and many more.

• IPv6SSL – A Basic Consulting System
  The goal of this project is to perform penetration testing on IPv6 networks by using a flexible framework which enables end-users to find previously undetected flaws in the network. It can also assist end-users in finding already known flaws in their IPv6-enabled network and prepare them for the future of the Internet.

• Blog Intelligence – Mining the Social Web
  The social web has evolved to an inherent part of the worldwide cyber culture. The goal of the BlogIntelligence project is to extract, analyze, and visualize new knowledge derived from this huge think tank. We use state-of-the-art In-Memory technology to enable real-time analytics over this massive amount of data.

• tele-Board – Connecting Ideas
  The goal of the Tele-Board system is to facilitate creative work for distributed teams and support their creative potential as well as help them to work more efficiently with digital tools. We developed the Tele-Board system for synchronous and asynchronous design work. To understand the remote team's work, a history browser allows users to easily view past design activities and obtain data for further statistical analyses.

• tele-Lab – A Virtual Lab for IT-Security
  tele-lab Internet Security is a web-based training platform that allows IT students and professionals to learn about various security topics, such as Man-in-the-Middle Attacks, etc. Users gain hands-on experience from live exercises. The practical exercises mainly concern the training of attacks on computer systems. When learning about Cyber Security, students must also learn about methods, tools and capabilities of attackers.

• Security Analysis Lab (SAL) – A Platform for Real-time Detection and Reconnaissance of Network Security Attacks
  The monitoring of complex computer networks for security incidents is a major challenge for today's admins. Although there is monitoring software installed on each of the hosts, they are not able to manually analyze the huge amount of data that is produced by the software. The Security Analytics Lab (SAL) is a platform that supports admins by gathering this monitoring data from the computer systems and storing it in a central database. Once the data is stored, it performs analysis and correlation for security attacks on this dataset. As a result, attacks can be detected, that do not only target single hosts, but span across multiple hosts.
