Research Interests
My research focus is alarm fatigue in medicine. Alarm fatigue occurs when medical staff is exposed to too many – mostly unnecessary – alarms. This leads to desensitisation and absent, delayed, or inappropriate response to the alarm. This is especially a problem in intensive care medicine where many alarm generating devices are in use.
To address this problem, I consider three different cetegories of unnecessary alarms:
- Technical correctness of alarms: Do the measurements that caused the alarm correctly describe the reality? For example, technically false alarms could be caused by incorrect heart rate measurements that are, in turn, caused by patient movement impairing the ECG signal.
- Clinical relevance of alarms: Are there any consequences to the alarm? If there are no interventions addressing the cause of the alarms, the alarm itself is irrelevant, although it might be technically correct.
- Avoidability of alarms: Some alarms are both technically correct and clinically relevant, but unnecessary nonetheless. Because they could have been avoided by precaution or foresight. Some critical conditions are predictable so that no alarm is necessary. Other critical conditions can be automatically corrected so that human intervention is unnecessary.
