Project Description

Social media platforms have witnessed a surge in hate speech, posing a threat to democratic discourse, social cohesion, and individual well-being. The sheer volume of content and the intricate nature of hate speech have overwhelmed manual moderation efforts. Existing methodologies for detecting and countering hate speech face significant challenges and limitations due to linguistic ambiguity, technical constraints, and complex legal frameworks. Moreover, malicious actors continuously evolve their tactics, employing euphemisms, sarcasm, and implicit language to evade detection. Beyond detection, proactive countering strategies, such as generating counter-narratives or promoting positive discourse, remain largely unexplored. In this master’s project, we will focus on automated and robust methods for not only detecting, but also effectively countering online hate speech.
