Beschreibung

In computer systems, virtualization is a technology that enables to share physical resources such as processors, memory and I/O devices among several guest operating systems running concurrently. The primary goal of virtualization is the consolidation of physical resources as it increases flexibility in resource allocation. It is hence one of the fundamental technologies in cloud computing. Despite of these goals, virtualization introduced technologies that offer a variety of opportunities to build dependable systems:

  • live migration enables to move servers form one physical machine to the next
  • "cheap" redundancy
  • the posibility to adjust the level of redundancy as needed
  • fine-grained and standardized monitoring

The project seminar "Dependability and Virtualization" consists of introductory lectures and semester projects carried out in groups of 2-3. Project topics will be announced and introduced in the lecture.

The first lecture takes place on April 18th 2011 in room A-1.2.

Voraussetzungen

The course is designed as an immersion course for Peter Tröger's lecture "Dependable Systems". Dependable systems hence should have been completed or should be attended in parallel to this course.

Literatur

The complete list of recommended readings is available on a separate page (http://www.citemaster.net/storedexport/156/). The list will be updated frequently during the course.

Lern- und Lehrformen

On request of at least one participant, the course will be given in English. There will be several hours for consultation where students may discuss problems that they experience in their projects. Specific dates will be announced in the lecture.

Leistungserfassung

The main focus of the course is the successful completion of the project. This involves a written report and a presentation at the end of the semester. Provided the technical soundness of the soultion, the quality of the presentation as well as of the report will determine the grade. It is hence indispensable that the contribution of each project member is clearly identified both in the presentation and the report.
