Beschreibung
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this course will be offered online until further notice. Detailed information, e.g. on the technical implementation (probably via Adobe Connect), will follow. (Stand: 21.04.2020)
How are the concepts of good and bad or right and wrong determined? Students will investigate different schools of ethics and moral philosophy, and apply these values to given situations to further develop their English speaking, listening, reading and writing skills.
In this ONLINE course, students will learn to express an opinion, identify logical fallacies, develop a persuasive argument, as well as discover differences between their personal and professional comfort zones in arguing for or against a controversial topic, including but not limited to surveillance, internet privacy, drone technology, and genetic modification. Students are encouraged to investigate controversial topics related to their area of study.
Each student will also complete an independent study portfolio of their own creation, selecting from available online study materials available to expand their vocabulary, strengthen their grammar knowledge and practice, and increase their language comprehension skills.
Time permitting, there may also be a Model United Nations (MUN) session, where students will be randomly assigned a UN member country to represent, formulate policies to debate in committee, and present a draft resolution to the General Assembly.
The number of participants is limited to best promote customization, effectively accommodate the needs of the students, and be most efficient in a limited 90-minute weekly ONLINE course offering.
STUDENTS MUST BE ENROLLED IN THIS CLASS IN ORDER TO PARTICIPATE ONLINE, EVEN IF YOU ARE ONLY CURIOUS AND VISITING THE COURSE. Each student will be sent a link to the online classroom once they have enrolled.
