Description
The lecture "Internet Security: Weaknesses and Targets" shall be seen as a door-opener in the field of network and Internet security. You will learn and understand basic principles and approaches of cyber attack and defense.
The lecture is based on knowledge gained during the "Internet- & WWW-Technologies". The ISEC lecture provides an overview about history and current developments in the cybersecurity area.
Topics Covered
- Motivation & Types of Cyber Attacks
- Enablers & Vulnerabilities - Human and Technical
- Malware - What's a Virus, Worm, Trojan...
- Software Security - Reverse Engineering
- Operating Systems and their Security Mechanisms
- Cryptography
- Law, Ethics & Remarks

Requirements
To be able to survive in the world of technical specifications, applications, protocols and requirements, a proper understanding of its fundamentals is needed.
This understanding has been provided in the recommended Lecture Internet- und WWW-Technologien.
If you think you might have received the qualifications for participation in another way, feel free to reach out to us to discuss.

In general, it is great if you are interested in the topic of cybersecurity. If you did not already attend, we recommend the events of the Cybersecurity Club at the HPI.
Learning
The lecture consists of both: lecture sessions in the lecture hall as well as exercise sessions to get practical insights. One highlight of the Lecture are the Hands-On exercises and scenarios in which you'll be able to experience hands-on cybersecurity challenges and solutions.
Examination
50% of the maximum exercise points (in 1st and 2nd half of semester) are needed to be able to take part in the examination at the end of the semester.
In the middle of the semester there will be a written intermediate exam which counts about 1/3. Every student has to pass the intermediate exam and take actively part in the exercise sessions to take the final exam and to successfully pass the course.
At the end of the course there is a second written exam (counts about 2/3). Students who want to improve their mark can also register for an oral examination. Outstanding exercise results and participation in discussion can lead to a better mark.
This results in the following aspects:
- Exercise Points: 50 % needed for admission to the Exams
The final mark will consist of:
- Intermediate Exam (1 / 3)
- Final Exam ( 2 / 3)
