Description
Subject-specific Academic and Professional Speaking and Scientific Writing
This is the third in the series of three HPI-specific courses (3/3 - Level 3 -) which deals particularly with the problems of MA and Ph.D. students. This course encourages and trains free, fluent speaking, communicating complex subject-specific information, assessing and constructing logical arguments in your training of giving successful, professional presentations on your own topics supported by helpful, individualized feedback. Furthermore, participants are strongly encouraged(not forced) to bring their own drafts, papers, articles, or else which are, then, to be submitted soon after. Each part of the scientific writing process will be explored and the results will/ can be discussed in the peer group to, finally, find and apply your most effective strategies. The most typical grammar, syntax and style errors are tackled, as well as the necessary levels of formality, register and tone using practical examples in order to reach publication level. The topics, selected according to the needs analysis, will be frequently adapted to the most pressing needs of the participants. Make your voice heard.
Literature
From various sources on subject-specific oral presentations, on assessing and shaping logically sound arguments, on the process of scientific writing, on the advanced language development aspects most urgently needed – copies will be provided.
Learning
Intensive free, fluent speaking training, improving professional presentations, supported scientific writing using participants’ own materials, individualized feedback and tasks.
Examination
On the basis of the Course Description above, participants are to agree with me on their individual task, which they will have primarily been working on during the course, thus proving their progress made.
