Description
Business case study analysis – mini cases
Specialists in the field of computer science and information technology often develop programs and systems so support other parts of a business organization: developing leadership assessment or teambuilding tools for human resources, monitoring throughput for production, calibrating metrics for research and development, implementing environmental controls for an industrial complex, or determining customer preferences for a newly-developed product.
In this skills-based English course, students will first become familiar with the case study analysis process introduced at Harvard Business School. Each student will then select a mini case study of two to three pages to analyse, selecting from a business area of their choice: finance, human resources, marketing and sales, management objectives, operations and production.
Each student will present their analysis before their peers, then submit a written case study analysis. Students will also work in small groups to give peer feedback on academic writing style, rhetorical constructions and critical thinking abilities in analysing business case studies.
In this context, each student gains insight into the functions and responsibilities within a business, strengthens their individual English language skills, as well as practice their rhetoric, critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
Each student will also complete an independent study portfolio of their own creation, selecting from available online study materials to expand their vocabulary, strengthen their grammar knowledge and increase their language comprehension, as well as sharpen their writing skills.
The number of participants is limited to encourage maximally effective learning in a 90-minute weekly course offering.
Examination
Final grades are determined by performance on the oral presentation, the written case study analysis, and the independent study portfolio. All parts are weighted equally.
