Description

The lecture gives an introduction to the vast field of wireless, mobile and ad hoc networks. The lecture first discusses the problems arising in wireless communications, followed by a presentation of general mechanisms (e.g. error-control techniques, spread-spectrum communications, diversity techniques, medium access control) to circumvent or solve these problems. In the second part we turn our attention to cellular systems: after discussing some system design fundamentals the important GSM and UMTS systems are summarized. The third part discusses wireless LAN systems, specifically the IEEE 802.11 standard, and some of the issues involved in managing personal and terminal mobility. In the last part some fundamentals of ad hoc networks and sensor networks are presented.

Requirements

Equipped with this lecture and some knowledge about performance evaluation you have a solid basis for writing masters theses in the exciting field of wireless and mobile networking.
