Description
Cloud computing is a key enabler for digital transformation as it empowers several desired attributes, e.g. agility, scalability, and self-service. More enterprises and individuals are leveraging cloud technologies by moving their infrastructure and data to the cloud where it is predicted by 2020 83% of enterprise workload will be cloud-based according to Forbes. Cloud customers are responsible to manage the cloud resources due to shared responsibility model employed by cloud providers, such as Amazon Web Services. However, security is a core challenge to cloud adoption since attacks against cloud platforms and services/applications running on the cloud are increasing and becoming more creative and difficult to tackle e.g. Capital One Hack. Therefore, new security tools and techniques are required to address security issues in cloud computing as the existing security tools and techniques fail to address the aforementioned security challenges in the cloud.
In this seminar, we will work on the several research areas in the cloud computing area that are connected to our individual research topics:
- Security management in mutli-cloud environment
- Cloud threat detection and incident response
- Vulnerability database
- Secure inter-company file-sharing
Please download the Week 1 pdf file for more detailed information about our seminar. You are also welcome to submit your own topics in cloud computing area.
Requirements
- Good programming skills in object oriented languages, especially Java.
- Practical software design and development skills.
- Basic interest in cloud technologies, e.g. Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud Platform.
- Basic interest in practical cyber security concepts and techniques, such as cryptography.
- Basic knowledge of access control mechanism
Learning
All participating students will work in multiple groups with each group consists of a maximum of 4 students to work on a chosen topic. There will be weekly or bi-weekly meetings where the group will give the latest update/progress of the topic. The format of the seminar will be a mixed of on-site at HPI and online where each group can choose which option is suitable for the seminar.
Examination
Final seminar grade will be calculated based on:
- Idea/mid-term presentation (15%)
- Source code and documentation (25%)
- Final presentation (30%)
- Implementation (20%)
- Personal and overall group performance (10%)
Dates
For the first meeting of seminar general introduction, the meeting will be on-site at H-E 11/12/13 (Grafikpoolraum) at 09.15 AM 06 November 2020.
If anyone wants to join via Zoom for the first meeting, please register to muhammad.sukmana@hpi.de.
