Description

Global Team-Based Innovation week is a one week project-based course covering 3 ECTS credits in which students will work together on dedicated entrepreneurial challenges. In collaboration with the University of St Gallen (HSG) and the Product Factory Program of the E-School, you will apply Design Thinking / human-centred design techniques towards creating innovation in a very fast paced environment of a one week course. Design Thinking is a human-centered approach to innovation that focuses on the feasibility, viability but even more important on the desirability of new products and services. Large corporations (Audi, Deutsche Bank, Swisscom, SAP) increasingly adopt this way of innovation to ensure that customers and users really want the newly developed products and services.

Additionally, you will learn and apply concepts of management and leadership in a multidisciplinary team together with the faculty members from the HSG (e.g. Prof Dr Thomas Schumacher ). Students will work in teams composed of IT master students from the Hasso Plattner Institute and management master students from the University of St. Gallen to determine project requirements, benchmark alternatives, conceive solutions, and develop prototypes through rapid prototyping, analysis, and user testing focusing on user experience. The purpose is to conceive a solution to a partner of the program.

Summary:

  • One intense week of addressing an entrepreneur challenge proposed by a partner of the program.
  • Teams are composed of students from the Hasso Plattner Institute and University of St Gallen to develop ideas and prototypes
  • Faculty from the Hasso Plattner Institute and University of St Gallen will  provide specific inputs on management and innovation (e.g. Prof Dr Thomas Schumacher (HSG) on leadership and management)
  • Culture exchange with Swiss students in Potsdam
  • The course will be integrated into the Product Factory Program of the E-School

 

Requirements

It is necessary to either have successfully finished the GTI program, being currently enrolled in GTI I,  or  have successfully finished the D-School Program Basic Track.

Learning objectives

Examination:  Group presentation and final outcome (50%) and individual self-reflection essay (50%)

Dates

The structure of the course is based on the Global-team Based Innovation I mastercourse, but it will be adjusted to a more fast paced structure where the students will have one week to conceive the concept of a solution.

The  lectures will take place from April 11th to 14th 2022.  During that week, students and faculty from University of St. Gallen will come to Potsdam to work on the challenge together with the students and faculty from HPI. During the beginning of the week, the challenge statement will be handed over to the students and, throughout the week, the students will be provided with inputs on Design Thinking and leadership and in-depth reflection sessions about leadership, leadership culture, and management techniques. Social activities are also planned to happen which include cultural tours in Potsdam. The program is planned to consist of 40h in total that includes lectures and social activities. 

During the week before (04.04 - 08.04), we will have our online kick-off when we will discuss the preliminary reading assignment. A commitment time of 15h for the reading assignment is expected.

During the week after (19.04 - 22.04), students are expected to write a self-reflection essay. For this essay (approx. 5-10 pages, details will be given in the course), the student applies the knowledge of design thinking and entrepreneurial management acquired in the course in order to deal creatively and critically with established perspectives.  A commitment time of 25h for the reading assignment is expected. 

 

Interested students should submit their application (short CV + motivational statement) to Danielly (danielly.depaula(at)hpi.de ) by January 14th. Depending on the number of applications we might schedule a 1-day event where you have to present yourself in a 15min time frame.

Notification of acceptance is planned to happen by January 21st and the confirmation of participation and official registration deadline by January 28th.
