Tobias Friedrich will form a new Research Unit funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG-Forschungsgruppe) together with Petra Berenbrink (University of Hamburg) as well as Nils Bertschinger, Amin Coja-Oghlan, Martin Hoefer, and Ulrich Meyer (Goethe University Frankfurt). The Research Unit is titled Algorithms, Dynamics, and Information Flow in Networks. Its research will have two main points of emphasis. One is to understand the behavior of dynamic processes in real-world networks, for example epidemics like the one we see right now or opinion formation in social media. The other aspect is the emergence of complex networks themselves, like the closely interconnected financial transactions of the German banking system and its resilience against global risks. For the latter the Research Unit will collaborate with the Deutsche Bundesbank.
