Invited talk at SFB Data Assimilation

The University of Potsdam is part of the collaborative research center SFB 1294 Data Assimilation. The project is funded by the German Research Foundation and brings together the Humboldt University, Technical University and the WIAS in Berlin, the University of Magdeburg, as well as the University and the GFZ in Potsdam. SFB 1294 coordinates their research efforts on the issue of integrating large datasets and the computational models for mining them.

As part of the project, Tobias Friedrich will give an invited talk about scale-free networks.

Title: The Intrinsic Geometry of Scale-Free Networks
Abstract: The node degrees of large real-world networks often follow a power-law distribution. Such scale-free networks can be social networks, internet topologies or many other networks. There is, however, no established and simple network model, which also has a high clustering of vertices as typically observed in real data. This talk will present several mathematical models of scale-free networks and introduce hyperbolic random graphs as a natural model that fulfils most properties of real world networks.
