The department of the Digital Technology, Governance and Policy, led by Prof. Dr. Gillian Bolsover was established at the Hasso Plattner Institute in October 2023. Our offices are located on Campus I of the HPI on Campus Griebnitzsee, Potsdam. 

Research Focus: 

The Digital Technology, Governance and Policy department researches the intersection of politics and digital technologies, with a focus on the global south and other less studied political contexts. The department is committed to knowledge dissemination, policy impact and public engagement. Through the Path to Power: 2024 project the team aims to develop a global picture of democracy worldwide through studies of elections in a variety of contexts, including in-depth case studies of elections in India, Mexico, South Africa, the USA and UK and a myriad of smaller case studies such as Moldova, Taiwan, Zambia, and France. 

Across our research and engagement efforts, the team’s current research foci include: 

• Misinformation, propaganda and online influence operations 

• Populism, extremism and political violence 

• Polarization and inequality 

• Quality and strength of democracies and authoritarian diffusion
