Opening Ceremony

28 October 2019

The HPI is celebrating its 20th anniversary! From October 28–30 the campus of the Hasso Plattner Institute will be transformed into a big birthday party venue. In addition to our anniversary, we will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Internet and the 10th anniversary of the HPI Academy, the continuing education provider for professionals in the field of Design Thinking:

On this occasion, numerous events will take place on the Potsdam-Babelsberg campus from the 28th to the 30th of October 2019. Kicking off the event series is the opening ceremony on October 28, 2019, where eminent personalities from the fields of politics, science and culture, who have accompanied the HPI over the past 20 years, are expected to attend. In addition to 20 years of HPI, we are also celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Internet and the 10th anniversary of the HPI Academy, the continuing education provider for professionals in the field of Design Thinking.

The development of the institute has been remarkable. In October 1999, the institute started its bachelor's program - at that time still in the rented premises at the Potsdam Luftschiffhafen (airship port). In 2003, the first master’s students began their studies at the HPI. In the following years, the institute was greatly expanded through the support of its founder. Since April 1, 2017, the Hasso Plattner Institute's offerings have grown further in the form of the Digital Engineering Faculty, which was founded jointly with the University of Potsdam.

Today, a total of 14 professors and over 200 senior researchers, lecturers and scientific staff members train around 500 students in the bachelor's and master's programs. The HPI School of Design Thinking, Europe's first innovation school for students modelled on the Stanford d.school, offers 240 places in its supplementary academic program.

We will also celebrate our anniversary with colleagues from our research branches in, for example, the US, China and South Africa. Together, we will not only take a look back at the past but also into the future. The current expansion of the institute's content will be reflected in the ceremony as well as in the exhibit and conference that accompany the event.
