Join Our Group

The Chair for Algorithm Engineering was established at the Hasso Plattner Institute in April 2015. The interests of the research group members are the foundations of computer science and developing efficient algorithms in practice. Our working language is English. The group is currently growing and has a number of vacancies and offers. Applicants working in our group are expected to interact with group members and are encouraged to initiate research in their individual areas of specialization.

Bachelor and Master Students

For a list of courses offered by the group, see our teaching page. HPI master students are invited for a half-year master project and/or thesis.

Ph.D. Students

We always welcome applications of prospective Ph.D. students, who are interested in working with us. There are a number of potential paths:

  • You can apply to one of the two HPI Research SchoolsService-Oriented Systems Engineering or Data Science and Engineering. The former focuses on building software systems, while the latter centers around data-driven analysis. Applications have to be submitted until  February 1 and August 15 every year, positions start in October. If you plan to join our group funded by one of the the Research Schools, please specify this in the cover letter of your application.
  • You can apply for a Ph.D. scholarships offered directly by the group. The most recent opening has deadline May 2023. For questions about this, ask Timo Kötzing.  Applications should be sent electronically via email to jobs-friedrich(at)hpi.de.
  • You can also bring your own funding. Also in this case, first contact Timo Kötzing.

Postdoc Positions

We regularly offer postdoc positions for one or two years. The current opening ends May 2023. Positions can be funded by the group, by specific research projects, by the HPI Research Schools or external:

  • You can apply for a one-year postdoctoral fellowship by one of the HPI Research Schools (see also above). The deadline is February 1 and August 15 every year.
  • Potential postdoctoral fellows may also consider applying for fellowships from external sources. In particular, Marie Curie Fellowships and Humboldt Research Fellowships. You may also consider fellowships offered by organizations from your home country or by the DAAD. For external fellowships, we will provide the necessary support as a host site to an application from a qualified individual with an appropriate research plan.

Guest Researchers

The group regularly hosts guest researchers. If you would like to visit us, send your CV and a short description of your plans for the visit to Tobias Friedrich.
