Join Our Group

The chair for Artificial Intelligence and Sustainability was established at the Hasso Plattner Institute in April 2022. The research group is working on both the use of energy in developing artificial intelligence (AI) as well as the use of AI in generating, storing and managing energy. The group is growing and has a number of vacancies and offers. We are a highly interactive research group and everyone is expected to initiate research in their individual areas of specialization.

Bachelor and Master Students

For a list of courses offered by the group, see our teaching page. HPI bachelor students are invited to participate in our current bachelor project which are research-oriented projects with 4-8 students for the duration of two semesters. You can find the descriptions of all HPI bachelor projects here. HPI master students are invited for a half-year master project and/or thesis.

Ph.D. Students

We always welcome applications of prospective Ph.D. students, who are interested in working with us. There are a number of potential paths:

  • You can apply to one of the two HPI Research SchoolsService-Oriented Systems Engineering or Data Science and Engineering. The former focuses on building software systems, while the latter centers around data-driven analysis. Applications have to be submitted until  February 1 and August 15 every year, positions start in October. If you plan to join our group funded by one of the the Research Schools, please specify this in the cover letter of your application.
  • You can apply for a Ph.D. scholarships offered directly by the group. Applications should be sent electronically via email to jobs-herbrich(at)hpi.de.

Postdoc Positions

We regularly offer postdoc positions for one or two years. Positions can be funded by the group, by the HPI Research Schools or external:

  • You can apply for a one-year postdoctoral fellowship by one of the HPI Research Schools. The deadline is February 1 and August 15 every year.
  • Potential postdoctoral fellows may also consider applying for fellowships from external sources. In particular, Marie Curie FellowshipsHumboldt Research Fellowships or DAAD. For external fellowships, we will provide the necessary support as a host site to an application from a qualified individual with an appropriate research plan.
  • If neither of these two paths feel appropriate, please contact Ralf Herbrich directly.

Guest Researchers

Our group regularly is always looking into hosting guest researchers. If you would like to visit us, send your CV and a short description of your plans for the visit to Ralf Herbrich.
