Researchers from Stanford visit HPI

The Hasso Plattner Institute (HPI) and the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HAI) start a research cooperation at the interface between artificial intelligence and human-computer interaction.

The Hasso Plattner Institute (HPI) and the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HAI) want to jointly develop scientific projects on human-centered AI systems in a special research program. To mark the occasion, researchers from Stanford came to HPI this week to begin their project work in a kick-off workshop. There will be an exchange of doctoral students in this area in the future. They will conduct joint research at Stanford and HPI.

The approach of their research: In today's world, almost every interaction between humans and the world is supported or mediated by AI - from social networks to e-commerce and medicine to writing, producing, and searching content. However, more research currently needs to focus on how this interaction is supported in a human-centered way. So far, the focus has been heavily on the algorithmic side of AI, with the actual interaction of humans with these intelligent systems only being considered an afterthought.

In this research program, the Hasso Plattner Institute and the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence are tackling the problem together and aim to bring together experts in AI and human-computer interaction to promote research into human-centric AI systems.

This collaboration encompasses a wide range of research areas. We will delve into basic research, exploring the explainability of AI systems and the design of social computing systems. On the applied science front, we will focus on AI-supported manufacturing tools, AI-supported human-to-human interactions, and the design of smart homes/offices/healthcare spaces in a privacy-compliant manner with the aid of AI.

The research programme's directors are Prof. Ralf Herbrich, Head of the AI and Sustainability research group and Managing Director at HPI, and James Landay, Co-Director of the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HAI).
