Design Thinking Assessment Metric for Use in Education

PI: Professor Bernard Roth

Abstract

Abstract: The purpose of the proposed research is to develop a tool for assessment of the mindsets and skills inherent in the design process, including building empathy, prototyping, developing a bias toward action, and fostering radical collaboration. The goal is to extend the development of an initial prototype of an assessment tool created during 2009-10 by investigating how the metric can be designed and developed for use in different K-Graduate educational settings. The settings will include K-12 classrooms, Stanford University design classrooms, and classrooms in Germany. The tool will be created using the design process, with a strong emphasis on rapid conceptual prototyping and iterative feedback, and will be researched and validated using design-based research methodologies. Ultimately, digital versions of the tool will be conceived once the tool is validated.
