The History and Evolution of Design Thinking at Stanford University (1950 to 2020)

PI: Bernhard Roth

Abstract

The unique Design and Design Thinking approaches developed at Stanford University have had a strong influence on the teaching and practice of design and innovation. These approaches have been evolving for nearly seventy years, from the 1950s to today.

The proposed research aims to establish a historical account of the evolution of Design and Design Thinking at Stanford. It aims to build an interactive online library that allows educators and researcher to learn and explore this evolution. Recent studies of the work of John E. Arnold sparked research and publications about the theoretical foundation of Design Thinking. This proposed research project aims to develop a more holistic account of the evolution of Design and Design Thinking at Stanford University.
