Integrating Research and Impact: Closing the Loop with Multimodal AnalysiS (IRIS)

PI: Jonathan Edelman

Abstract

Integrating Research and Impact (IRIS) will make a robust, data-driven toolkit accessible to design teams to support training and performance. IRIS brings translational research in design team performance to a wider audience in the form of user-friendly research and training materials. Based on the Designing as Performance and the Performative Patterns frameworks, the key advancement of this approach is that it relies on unique and observable, measurable and quantifiable operational units. The goal of IRIS is to integrate a “gold standard” dataset with the capabilities of the Digital Design Observatory (DDO). This project will therefore augment the research and practice of design thinking (DT) —which is characterized by complex multimodal design team interactions, who are often challenged to deliver breakthrough products, services and systems.

Leveraging state of the art machine learning models, we have mined multimodal patterns (affect, text, audio, gestures) from design teams dataset (Edelman 2012).

Advancing our work from the previous three years, IRIS is an integration that will deliver 1) the “Designing as Performance: Performative Patterns” handbook, and 2) a complementary digital repository for augmenting DT research and practice.

Our Research Question is: What characterizes the mechanisms, and metrics of effective mapping, visualization, and integration of accessible Performative Patterns materials that augment DT research and practice?
