Federal President awards Prof. Dr. Lothar Wieler the Cross of Merit First Class

Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier presented him with the Order of Merit on January 18th, 2024, in Bellevue Palace.

Steinmeier honored Prof. Wieler for his outstanding commitment to the population's health - especially for his dedication during the pandemic as President of the Robert Koch Institute (RKI).

In April 2023, Prof. Wieler started his new position at the HPI. Since then, he has been the spokesperson for the Digital Health Cluster and head of the department "Digital Global Public Health" at the Hasso Plattner Institute.

Prof. Tobias Friedrich, HPI Managing Director and Dean of the joint Digital Engineering Faculty of HPI and the University of Potsdam, congratulates: "Lothar Wieler is determined to protect the population from diseases and improve their health. With his research and work as president of the RKI, he has rendered outstanding services to the health of many people in Germany and beyond. We consider ourselves fortunate to have such an internationally recognized and highly esteemed public health expert at our institute - and to be able to help shape the digitalization of healthcare with him. The HPI congratulates Lothar Wieler on this great honor."

Prof. Wieler is developing the Digital Health Cluster with students and researchers as a place of excellence for research and teaching in digital health. His focus as head of the "Digital Global Public Health" research group lies in how to fight against antibiotic resistance in the Global South with the help of digital technologies. His research also focuses on the opportunities and risks of artificial intelligence for healthcare.

In June 2023, Prof. Wieler gave his inaugural lecture on preventive healthcare at the Hasso Plattner Institute - with the message: "There is Glory in Prevention."
