General questions about starting your studies at HPI
- In terms of organization, it is important to understand that, as an HPI student, you are formally enrolled at the joint Digital Engineering Faculty of the Hasso Plattner Institute (HPI) and the University of Potsdam.
- Enrollment for your bachelor's or master's degree program takes place online via the PULS portal of the University of Potsdam. If you have any questions about the exact procedure, please contact the staff at the university's Student Office directly. International students can also contact the UP International Office. PULS will continue to be relevant for you, as you will need to use the system to re-register for your subsequent semesters at the end of each lecture period. Once you have successfully re-registered, you can also use the system to generate your own study certificates at any time.
- At HPI, we use the MyCampus system to organize our studies. You will learn everything you need to know about this during the Welcome Days (Erstitage)* before the semester starts.
- Questions specifically related to HPI or your degree program can be directed to our program managers. They can assist you directly or refer you to the appropriate department at HPI if necessary.
*Note: You are also welcome to take advantage of the orientation services offered by the University of Potsdam. The interdisciplinary orientation day “UP.START” in particular provides a wealth of practical information about the services offered by the UP. However, please bear in mind that the organization of your HPI study program may differ in some respects. If in doubt, always refer to the HPI information or ask our program managers.
Where would you like to live during your studies? Would you prefer to be as close as possible to your place of study in Potsdam or in the middle of student (night)life in Berlin? There are various options – but finding accommodation can often be one of the first major challenges.
Affordable housing is in high demand, especially in the Potsdam and Berlin/Brandenburg region. That's why you should start looking for accommodation as early as possible. A particularly popular option is a place in a student residence run by Studierendenwerk West:Brandenburg. These residences offer comparatively affordable accommodation and are well suited to the needs of students.
Since places in the student residences are limited and not all students can be accommodated there, it is worth considering private accommodation options as well. The earlier you start your search, the better your chances of finding suitable accommodation for the start of your studies. For more information about accommodation in Potsdam and Berlin, please visit the University of Potsdam website.
A new chapter in life is always exciting – and sometimes challenging. This is especially true if you are international and starting your studies far from home. Starting your studies at HPI and studying abroad brings with it many new impressions, questions, and organizational tasks.
The HPI Buddy Program is designed to help you find your way around Germany and HPI right from the start. As a participant, you will be connected with an experienced student from a higher semester. Your buddy is already familiar with everyday student life at HPI and will support you with any challenges you may encounter during your studies, big or small.
Your buddy will be there for you even before you arrive. Whether you have questions about getting started at HPI, your stay in Germany, important information about your studies, or the campus, your buddy will be there to help you. You can also count on helpful tips for practical everyday matters such as shopping, SIM cards, clothing, or leisure activities in the area.
Would you like to learn more about the HPI Buddy Program or register directly? You can find all further information on the HPI International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) website – your central point of contact for international studies at HPI.
Can't find your question here? Our program managers and student online mentors will be happy to help you.
