Mobile communications / Mobilkommunikation (WS 21/22)

Content

This class will explain basic mechanisms for wireless and mobile communication, protocols used in a wireless context (e.g., MAC protocols), and work its way up to two popular system classes: cellular communication (i.e., 3G UMTS, 4G LTE, 5G, with some speculation about 6G) and WiFi (in the many forms of 802.11). Time permitting, we might cover also short-range or energy-efficient wireless systems (like Bluetooth 802.15.4 or LoRa).

Format

This class is typical lecture + homework assignment class. Most probably, exams will happen as oral exams (depending on number of participants). The class is taught in English.

As of late September, the CoVid-19 situation looks like in-person classes will be possible without too many restrictions; this is clearly the prefered choice. Lecture recordings will be made available as far as technically viable. But given the uncertaintainties around CoVid-19, we might run the class as a so-called "flipped classroom", with lectures as pre-recorded videos plus Question-and-Answer sessions. Q&A might take place online or in person on campus, depending on the pandemic situation. Stay tuned for more details.

All material will be provided via Moodle. Please register for this course in Moodle

And old version of this class (taught at Paderborn University) is already available to give you an idea about scope and style. This winter term 21/22 instance will be fairly similar in style and scope, but videos will be updated (if we need videos for CoVid). So take that with a grain of salt.

Prerequisites

You really should have some background in computer networks in general. In particular, some basic understanding of physical and link-layer aspects is really recommended. Also, some basics in probability theory and linear algebra will ensure that you enjoy the class much more. There is also a self-assessment test so you can check yourself whether you think you have the necessary prerequisites. If not, please talk to Holger Karl and we can see whether the class still makes sense for you.

Exams

  • There will individual oral exams; by appointment.
  • In order to be admitted to the exam, you need to successfully submit TWO homework assignments; submission is individually per student (no group work); you can freely choose which ones to work on out of a list of over 10 assignments. You can keep submitting solutions until you have reached two successful submissions. No bonus points will be awarded for the actual exam.

Module

This class belongs to the module MA-ISAE Konzepte und Methoden, ISAE-Techniken und Werkzeuge und ISAE-Spezialisierung. (At least, that is the intention :-).
