Abstract
We propose a focused research project that looks at how interactions involving people and machines can be augmented using the power of crowdsourced assistance. This work builds on prior HPI research in embodied design thinking using telepresence robotics and embodied design improvisation methodology.! ! We outline a line of research that helps remote operators to recognize subtle, shared backchannel cues that improve empathetic interaction, and to respond appropriately. As part of this research, we seek to understand how to operationalize this type of crowd power for real-world deployment, and also to understand how the crowdsourced actions could be used to bootstrap automated interaction systems.
