In-Memory Energy Management Bachelor Podium

Potsdam. Using in-memory technology bachelor students at the Hasso Plattner Institute (HPI) found a solution to manage the data flood resulting from the power grid of the future. It enables rapid evaluation of detailed consumption information to identify waste of energy using an iPad app. For the first time ever, this application allows to supervise energy consumption live, predict upcoming consumption and take measures based directly on that information. For instance, it is possible to determine the best-fitting energy rate at any time and if appropriate, to change the provider. The eight team members presented the solution, which they developed in cooperation with the SAP AG, at the Bachelor podium on July 8, to more than 200 guests from politics, science and society in Potsdam. "New requirements are resulting from the much discussed expansion of the renewable energy sector on energy provision in the future. A smart power grid will forward consumption information of each customer to the provider", illustrates Steffen Pade, speaker of the students. During their project, they simulated such a smart grid as actual area-wide measurements will only be available in the coming years. They were able to process the resulting flood of information in real-time using state-of-the-art in-memory technology. "It is possible to enter the data while simultaneously analyzing it without the need of time-consuming conversions. Via the developed iPad-app, customers are able to monitor their consumption in detail and up to the second, to detect highly consumptive devices in the household or enterprise", states Pade. Using conventional processes, the upcoming data flood could only be managed with great effort, said the HPI-student. To improve this situation was a main motivation for the project. "After all, our work is a contribution to realize the energy turnaround", stated Pade. The project group was supervised by Prof. Hasso Plattner, leader of the Enterprise Platform and Integration Concepts chair, and the doctoral candidates Matthieu P. Schapranow and Christian Schwarz. Among other projects, the chair deals with the usage of in-memory databases in the field of enterprise software.
