European Digital Education Hub Design Thinking

There is a strong need for cooperation and dialogue between stakeholders in digital education. To address this issue, a new European network was launched in 2022 to facilitate the exchange of experiences and solutions between all education sectors.

The HPI D-School is part of a "Community of Practice" for the European Commission's Digital Education Hub, which the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) has set up together with ten partner organizations.

The Community of the Hub offers a range of services, from mentoring programs for teachers and heads of educational institutions to digital consultation hours as a quick "first aid" for digitization issues, to Design Thinking workshops and a joint accelerator program that enables an idea to be developed into an applicable educational solution.

Design Thinking and Digital Education

As part of the practice-oriented network, the HPI D-School supports cross-sector networking and calls for submitting ideas for digital education.

In the Hub's Design Thinking channel, community members can join monthly meet-ups hosted by the HPI D-School to discuss the application of the Design Thinking mindset and methods in education.

Once a year, the HPI D-School team identifies a challenge from the community for which students will develop new solutions in a Design Thinking project as part of their training.

Moreover, we facilitate Design Thinking workshops for and with representatives from all areas of the education system. The first workshop occurred in November 2022 at Hasso Plattner Institute in Potsdam.

Design Thinking workshop at Hasso Plattner Institute

For the first Design Thinking Workshop for European Digital Education Hub community members, we identified a design challenge about "Resilience through digital education." Several coaches and experts discussed Design Thinking with the participants to address this challenge, creating a platform for learning and innovation and designing tangible solutions.

The workshop activities offered space for brainstorming between participants and immersion in the Design Thinking process. 40 participants from 18 countries presented solutions and were encouraged to develop them further for possible implementation.

The next workshop will be held at HPI in November 2023.
